A carrier should be more than a bag your dog can squeeze into. For a Bichon Frise or any small dog, useful design means comfortable space, secure fastenings, ventilation and a base that stays stable when lifted.
Measure the dog, not the breed
Use the product's measurement guide and check internal dimensions. Your dog should be able to stand, turn and lie in a natural position for the intended journey. Thick coats and individual proportions make breed-based size assumptions unreliable.
Match construction to the trip
A rigid carrier can offer useful structure; a soft-sided model may suit some transport arrangements. Neither is automatically appropriate for every journey. Check the current airline, rail or vehicle requirements directly and confirm how the carrier must be secured.
Inspect zippers, door latches, seams and the base. Ventilation must remain unobstructed, including when the carrier is positioned among luggage. Avoid designs that become hot or collapse around the dog.
Make the carrier familiar
Leave it open at home with suitable bedding. Reward voluntary investigation, then brief rests inside. Progress to closing the door for a moment, lifting gently and taking short practice trips only while the dog remains comfortable.
Do not use an internal tether in a way that creates entanglement or strangulation risk; follow the manufacturer's instructions and supervise appropriately.
Plan for comfort
Bring cleaning materials and allow suitable breaks. A carrier does not make it safe to leave a dog in a parked car. If travel causes marked fear or sickness, ask your veterinarian for a plan before the departure date.
