Scratching outside a bedroom door can reflect activity, a learned request for attention or frustration about lost access. It is not evidence that a cat wants to ruin your sleep. Look at the pattern and the cat's needs before deciding how to respond.
Prepare before bedtime
Offer a short interactive play session that allows stalking and catching, followed by an appropriate meal or portion from the daily allowance. Provide comfortable resting places, water, litter access and quiet activities outside the bedroom.
Daytime enrichment can help, but do not repeatedly wake a resting cat to exhaust it. Cats need substantial sleep as well as opportunities for activity.
Make access predictable
Decide whether the bedroom is normally available and apply the rule consistently. Practice brief closed-door periods during the day, pairing calm behavior with rewards and increasing duration gradually. This is easier than introducing a new boundary at midnight.
Avoid opening the door only at the peak of scratching if the cat's needs are already met and it is comfortable. At the same time, do not ignore signs of distress or illness under the assumption that every sound is a demand.
Protect the surface safely
Place an attractive scratcher nearby and reward its use. Temporary pet-safe protection can reduce damage while the routine changes. Avoid startling devices, strong fragrances or punishment.
Investigate a new pattern
Sudden nighttime vocalizing, restlessness or changed toileting deserves a veterinary check, especially in an older cat.
Progress is usually gradual. Keep notes on play, meals and sleep so you can see which adjustments make evenings easier.
